THC and Nicotine Test Kits: What Parents Should Compare
How to evaluate single-substance and targeted test kits for cannabis, THC metabolites, nicotine, and cotinine concerns.
Match the test to the concern
THC and nicotine concerns are not interchangeable. Cannabis tests commonly look for THC metabolites. Nicotine-related tests often look for cotinine, a nicotine metabolite. Read the product label for the exact target before buying.
If a teen uses prescribed medication, nicotine replacement, CBD products, or products from a regulated or unregulated source, interpretation can be complicated. A home test does not explain the context.
Check cutoff and confirmation details
Cutoff levels matter because a result below the cutoff may be reported as negative even if a small amount is present. Product pages should make the cutoff and sample type easy to find.
For serious consequences, look for kits that describe lab confirmation or plan to arrange confirmatory testing separately.
Use results as a safety signal
A targeted test can help a parent decide whether a concern needs a bigger conversation. It should not be the only basis for punishment, medical decisions, or claims about impairment.
Keep the discussion focused on safety, driving, school expectations, mental health, and whether professional support is needed.
